Martin Bookspan interviews composer Vittorio Rieti. Rieti talks about his studies economics at the University of Milan, where he obtained a doctorate in 1917 that he never used; about his composition studies with Casella, and orchestration with Respighi. He speaks about his career as a composer in Europe and the United States. Speaking about his time in Paris, he talks about ballet music that he wrote for Diaghilev (Barabau being particularly successful), and much incidental music for the Parisian theatre of Louis Jouvet. The composer discusses in detail each of the following works, excerpts of which are then played during the interview: Dance variations (for string orchestra) (1956), Chorale, variations and finale (for two pianos), Concertino (for flute, viola, violoncello, harp, and harpsichord) (1964).

Martin Bookspan interviews American contemporary composer William Mayer. Mayer talks about his studies at Yale University with Herbert Baumgartner; about his career as a composer; about his work with pianist William Masselos; and about his son pianist Stephen Mayer. Speaking about the variety of music he composed, Mayer says that he prefers to write show music. He speaks about his work as a treasurer for CRI (Composers Recordings, Inc.). The BCMP collection consists of many dozens of reel to reel audiotapes of radio broadcasts aired over WMUA during the 1970s and early 1980s by and for the universitys African American community. Included is a range of locally-produced public affairs, cultural, and music programming, with some content licensed from around the country. A few of the tapes are associated with the Five Colleges National Public Radio affiliate, WFCR.

The American Revolution collection includes hundreds of hours of recordings from WBCN during the period 1968-1974, along with posters, ephemera, videos, oral histories, and other associated materials. The audio and video content has been digitized by our partners, Lichtenstein Creative Media, and will be made available to the public through our digital repository. Materials are currently in the process of being transferred to UMass.

The WFCR Collection contains nearly 4,500 reel to reel recordings of locally-produced radio programs, reflecting over fifty years of the cultural and intellectual life of western Massachusetts. Drawing upon the talents of the faculty and students of the Five Colleges (Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and UMass Amherst), the collection offers a remarkable breadth of content, ranging from public affairs to community and national news, cultural programming, childrens programming, news and current events, scholarly lectures, classical music, and jazz.

KBOO’s analog audio archive includes almost 7,500 items of radio programming in 5, 7, 10″ open reel, CDs, cassettes, DATs, and minidiscs format. KBOO Community Radio went on the air in June of 1968, and radio program recordings date from the late 1940s. This is a collection created from institutional records. This collection is unprocessed. Our archives include Oregon artists Ken Kesey, Ursula LeGuin, Gus Van Sant, political figures such as Kent Ford, and Winona LaDuke, as well as hundreds of poets, hundreds of artists, and hundreds of activists, both recorded lectures, panels, conferences, and street actions. We also have significant live music recordings from Doc Watson to Elliot Smith.

WGLT is licensed to Illinois State University and is affiliated with NPR. It was originally a student operated radio station, signing on the air on April 24th, 1962 as a closed circuit radio station. A few years later, on February 4, 1966, the station received FCC licensing and began FM boradcasting. The station became a full NPR member in the 1970's. Both the audio and paper records are unprocessed. In the past year, the university archivist and the station’s general manager (along with a School of Communication professor) started the process to inventory all the audio and paper records.
